Sarasate

(si-ra-si’-té), Pablo (Martin Meliton Sarasate y Navascuez) de, Pamplona, Spain, March ro, 1844— Biarritz, Sept. 20, 1908; eminent violinist; at 10 played before the Queen, who presented him with a Strad i var i, after succ. concerts in Spain he studied with Alard (vln.) and Reber (comp.), Paris Cons., taking ist vin.-prize 1857, and a premier acce it, 1859, in harm.; he made very wide and very succ. tours; 1889, America. For him Lalo c. his rst vin.-concerto and the ‘‘Symph. espagnole’’; Bruch, his 2nd concerto and the Scotch Fantasia; A. C. Mackenzie, the ‘“Pibroch’’ Suite. S. pub. ‘“Zigeunerweisen” for vln. and orch.; “‘Spanische Ténze’’ for vin. and pf., fantasias, etc. He left a large coll. of mementos to his native city, later housed in a_ special museum.
