MORMYRUS

(Yunanca köken — orijinale bakınız.) The name was anphed by Linnaeus to a genus of abdominal fishes place^d in the Malacopterygian order, between the Lucioid and Stluroid families in the system of Cuvier. The Morniyri differ from the pikes in little else save in the small size of their mouth, of which the angles are formed by the maxillary bones; and a corresponding modification of the alimentary canal, the intestines being longer, and complicated bv two caeca. The Mormyri are confined to the rivers of Africa, and are reckoned the best-flavoured fishes that are caught in the Nile. [s. 784]
