The layer next the tooth papilla (enamel epithelium) is a columnar epithelium formed by the deepest layer of the invaginated oral epithelium. It ultimately forms the hard enamel. The second or intermediate layer of the enamel o. is composed of cells which have become stellate and are united by their branches to form a very loose, spongy, or gelatinous layer.
