Erik Gustaf, a Swedish historian; born in the province of Wermland, Jan. 12, 1788. He sat in the national Parliament for some years, and was distinguished for his eloquénce. His “History of the Swedish People,” “ History of_ the State of Sweden from 1718 to 1882,” and various contributions to the history of philosophy, theology, and msthetics, are epoch-making in Swedish letters. He died in Stockholm, April 23, 1847, Geikie, Sir Archibald, a Scottish poalreict; born in Edinburgh, Scot and, Dee. 28, 1835. From 1870 to 1881 he was Murchison Profe or of Geology in Edinburgh University; and in 1881 was appointed director to the survey of the United <ingdom, being at the same time a at the head of the Museum of tactical Geology, London.
