in South Hast Africa; a large sheet of water separated from the Indian Ocean by the penine sula and island of Inyack. 'The a 4 stretches N. and S, upwards of miles, with a breadth of from 16 to 20 miles, and forms the southern extrem: ity of the Portuguese settlement of Mozambique. It is available for ve els of large tonnage, though the pres ence of shoals, banks, and flats, renders the navigation of the bay somewhat intricate.
