Dash Pot

—1. A device usually consisting of a cylinder and piston, offering a retarding foree by which to cheek any sudden action. 2. A cylinder employed in steam engines which are fitted with trip gears; the dash pot is provided with a coil spring, a piston acted upon by steam or an air tight piston, behind which is a vacuum; the object in cither case being to elose the admi ion valves suddenly, as soon as they are released by the trip.
