(Lat. rubric a, red earth used b y carpenters to mark wood), titles (in red ink) to chapters in cla ical law books; later, directions in prayer-tooks, hence is meaning of ‘rules for Divine Service and administration of the Sacraments’; modern r. is often printed in italics instead of red ink.
