Averysborough

(ā'ver-is-bur'ro.) (Am. Hist.) A village of N. Carolina, Cumber land co., on Cape Fear river, 40 m. S. of Raleigh; near which, March 16, 1865, was fought between the Union troops under Gen. Slocum, and the Confederates under Gen. Hardee, a battle which resulted in the retreat of the Confederates. The lo on each side was abt. 500 men. [s. 64]
