Machicolations

Openings formed at the tops of castles and fortifications, for the purpose of defense, by setting the parapet out on corbels, the interval between the corbels being Machicolations. left open to allow mi iles to be thrown down. They took the place of the Hourds of an earlier period. Often reproduced in Modern Gothic.
