Braces

Ropes in connection with yard-arms, by means of which a yard is hauled to any required position; the braces of light upper- (such as royal-and skysail-) yards, are usually in direct connection with a yardarm, while the braces of the heavier yards, such as lower-, and topsail yards are generally roved through a block attached to a pendant in connection with the yard.
