anion

[Gr. ἀνίων ( αnion ), pr. par. of ἄνειμι (απeimi) = to go up; ἀνά (ana) = up, and ἰών (ion), pr. par. of εἶμι (eimi) = to go.] Electrolysis: Faraday's name for that element in a body decomposed by voltaic electricity which appears at the anode [ANODE], or positive electrode of the battery. It is opposed to CATION (q.v.).
