(dōm.) (Arch.) A cupola. The term is derived from the Italian duomo, a cathedral, the custom of erecting cupolas on those buildings having been so prevalent that the name dome has, in the French and English languages, been transferred from the church to this kind of roof.-(Mach.) In steam-locomotives, that part of the boiler which, conical in form, constitutes a steam-chamber, and is usually surmounted by the safety-valves. [s. 297]
