SATSUMA WARE

a variety of pottery of semi-porcelain, made in Japan. It has a glaze of light straw color, the surface of which is covered with a network of fine cracks. Red and green and dull gold are usually employed for decorating the ware, a favorite ornament of which is the cry san the mum. Pheasants and other fowl are also frequently used. Old Satsuma ware is highly esteemed by collectors.
