Electroscope

—An instrument used to detect the presence of an electric charge and to determine whether the charge is positive or negative. A familiar form is the gold leaf electroscope consisting of two strips of gold foil suspended from a bra rod within a gla jar. To measure the amount of the charge, however, it is nece ary to use an electrometer.
