Chlorate

—A salt of chloric acid. All chlorates are soluble in water; on heating they evolve much oxygen and a trace of chlorine, the residue being a chloride. On account of their oxydizing properties chlorates are much used as reagents, and in the compounding of explosives, fireworks, matches, etc. The most important are the chlorates of barium, pota ium and sodium.
