JAMES DALRYMPLE, first VISCOUNT, (ster,) an eminent Scottish statesman and jurist, B. at Drummerchie, Ayrshire, 1619; D. 1695. He was the ancestor of several distinguished men in English history; and was the author of Institutions of the Law of Scotland (1681), which is still a leading text-book among Scotch lawyers. [s. 851]
