Seaman

(se'man,) pl. SEAMEN. [A.S. sæmann.] (Naut.) One skilled in seamanship and navigation, and who follows the sea as a profe ion or as a means of livelihood. An able S. is one perfect in his knowledge and duty; an ordinary S., one who is le competent; and a landsman, one who is a raw hand fresh from shore.- SEAMANSHIP signifies a thorough acquaintance with the art of managing and navigating a ship; applicable both to officers and men, and indispensable to those who have the ship under their command.
