aplocerus

[Gr. ἁπλός ( haplos ); from ἁπλόος ( haploos ) = simple, and κέρας ( keras ) = horn.] A sub-genus of Antilope. The species are from America. In character they approach the goats. IMG:content-0614.jpg:[blocks in formation] ( haplos ) simple. The name was given by Hauy because a cube is simpler than a dodecahedron. (See def.). A mineral; a variety of Manganesian Lime, Iron Garnet. It is usually of a deep brown or orange-brown colour. It is opaque. It is harder than quartz. Like the garnet, it is crystallised in the form of a dodecahedron, with rhomboidal planes; but these are striated parallel with the le er diagonal, which, in Haüy's opinion, indicates that the primitive form of the crystal is a cube. Found on the banks of the Lena, in Siberia, also in Saxony.
