MATTHEW, Archbishop of Canterbury, was born in 1504. After his Cambridge course lie was appointed eventually King’s Chaplain and Canon of Ely, and then, in 1544, Master of Corpus Christ i College, Cambridge, and Vice-Chancellor of that University. On Queen Mary's acce ion he was deprived of his offices, but Elizabeth made him Archbishop of Canterbury. He founded the Antiquarian Society, was a collector of MSS., and edited “ Chronicles of Wal singh am,” etc.
