Mantegna, ANDREA

1431-1506. Leading painter of the Paduan school; distinguished for scientific accuracy in anatomy and perspective. His style is otherwise somewhat rigid. He has fine frescoes in the Church of the Eremitani, at Padua, and at Mantua, at Hampton Court, nine pictures of the Triumph of Cæsar, and fine oil paintings in London, Paris, and Milan. Geologist of Lewes, Su ex, who formed a collection of its fo ils, now in the British Museum. Most important discoveries sprang out of his researches in the strata of Wealden formation: to him we owe the discovery and demonstration of Iguanodon and its colo al allies.
