CARRERE, JOHN MERVEN

(1858. 1911), architect, was b. in Rio de Janeiro, American parents. He was educated in Switzerland, later studying architecture for four years in Paris. He returned v0 ‘America, and after two years spent in the office of McKim, Meade and White of New York, he went into partners hit with Thomas Hastings, the firm rapidly gaining a highly favorable reputation fol the artistic and imaginative quality ol their work. Their first important com: mi ion was the Ponce de Leon Hotel ai St. Augustine, Fla., followed by the Alcazar in the same place. They were the architects of the New York Public Library, erected at a cost of ove $8,000,000 from designs which won the prize in a competition in which the fore most architects of the country took part
