Nicotine

C10H14N2. Bpt. 241° C. This poisonous alkaloid is a pyridine derivative. It is an oily substance with a horrible odor, easily soluble in water. It is a distinctive principle of the tobacco-plant, and obtained from it. Upon oxidation it yields nicotinic acid.
