CARNEGIE HERO FUND

a func created and endowed in 1904 by Andrey Carnegie. It provides rewards for in dividuals who have performed deeds o} unusual heroism or self-sacrifice, or, case of their death, for their widows anc dependents. The rewards consist oi medals and money grants. The medal: are of gold, silver, and bronze and sé forth the circumstances under which the heroic act was performed. Rewards are made only after most careful investiga, tion of all circumstances. The affairs of the Fund are administered by a com: mi ion with headquarters at Pittsburgh, consisting of 21 members, this commis. sion being self-perpetuating. The president of the commi ion since its inception and until his death in 1922 was Charlei L. Taylor. Since then the vice-presid 1b W.J. Holland, has acted as head of th commi ion. The endowment amoun to $5,000,000. About $2,500,000 he been awarded since the Fund sreated, together with over 1,600 medals. rhe Fund covers the United States, Canada, and New Found land, but similar Funds were established by Mr. Carnegie in Great Britain, and Ireland, France, Germany, Belgium, WNetherands, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, and Denmark.
