Piles: small tumors outside (external) or inside (internal) the anus, freely supplied with blood-ve els. The internal variety rarely protrude except after defæcation, and are also denominated itching, bleeding. or blind. An operation is nece ary to effect a permanent cure, although laxatives, cold applications, astringents, and the avoidance of alcoholics and highly-seasoned food, will render them le annoying. The internal variety occasionally extrude in such ma es that their return is impo ible, and sloughing occurs, which is very painful, but results in a cure. External piles may be cured by incision or astringents.
