ROBERT, F.R.S., 1809-1882. English naturalist, "father of modern biology." His voyage on the Beagle, 1831-36, led to results recorded in a Journal, 1839, Zoology, 184042, Coral Reefs, 1842, Volcanic Islands, 1844, and other works. From 1842 he lived near Orpington, Kent, experimenting with pigeons, flowers, worms, etc. His most celebrated books are Origin of Species, 1859, and Descent of Man, 1871.
