English admiral. He commanded a fleet on the American coast 1776-78. made ineffectual attempts to bring about peace, was made Viscount 1782 and Earl 1788, and defeated a French fleet June 1, 1794.-His brother, SIR WILLIAM, 1729-1814, commanded the British forces in America 1775-78, won the battles of Long Island, White Plains, Brandy wine, and German town, occupied Phila., and became an Irish Viscount 1799.-Their elder brother, GEORGE AUGUST US, Viscount, 1724-1758, was killed at Ticonderoga in the French war.
