[Eng. cosmetic); -ol; -ine.] A commercial name for petrolatum, a jelly-like preparation obtained from the residuum of petrol eum, soluble in ether and alcohol. It is used as an emollient and as a basis for ointments. Also called petroleum jelly, petroleum ointment, vaseline, etc. [VASELINE.]
