NEW HE BRIDES MISSION

[s. 553] : This is a synodical union of mi ionaries of several different Presbyterian Boards carrying on mi ion worlc in the New He brides Islands. The eight churches supporting this mi ion are the Presbyterian Church in Canada (formed by the union in 1876 of the various branches of Scotch Presbyterians in Canada); the United Free Church of Scotland, and the Presbyterian Churches of Victoria, New Otago, Tasmania, South Australia, and New South Wales. The Established Church of Scotland also renders support in connection with the Church in Canada. The representatives of these various branches of the Presbyterian Church have formed themselves into one Synod, called the “New He brides Mi ion Synod,” which meets annually, and is the supreme authority in the mi ion in all general matters, each mi ionary being under the Synod in a general way, while personally responsible only to the church by which he is supported. The first mi ionary was the Rev. John Geddie, sent out in 1848 by the Sece ion Church in Nova Scotia. He was joined later by the Rev. John Inglis of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland, originally appointed to the Maoris of New Zealand, and followed in 1857 by Rev. John G. Paton and Rev. Josiah Cope land. Then one by one the other churches came into the union, some sending workers, some contributing to the general support of the mi ion. The field of the mi ion is found in the islands of the New He brides, excepting those farthest to the north, which fall within the field of the Me lanes i an Mi ion. NICKERIE. See Nickeeie. Born 1844, died July 20, 1894.: NcTTton, Jotin Ngrao His body was buried in the ocean about 240 miles from Lagos. He was a laborious, deeply pious, and succe ful mi ionary. His wife preceded him to her heavenlv home only by a few months. Both died from exposure to the African climate. These two have terrible remembrance by the a special claim to church to which they belonged, in that they helped greatly in the reestablishment of Southern Baptist Mi ions in Africa after the interruption caused by the Civil War in America. 554
