Alex., b. Kiev, Ru ia, Aug. 10, 1900; one of most individual and accomplished of Soviet comosers; came into intern at’l promiyence for his descriptive works for orch. and chamber ensembles which are based on the rhythms and sounds of labor; esp. “The Soviet Iron Foundry,’’ in radical dis sonantal style, which has been played by a number of Amer. orchs.; piano pieces, etc. Moszkowski (mésh-kéf’-shk}), (1) Moritz, Breslau, Aug. 23, 1854—Paris, 4, 1925; of a wealthy Polish gentleman; pupil of Dresden Cons., Stern and Kullak Cons.; teacher Stern Cons. for years; later début with succ. as pianist, Berlin, 1873; until 1897 Berlin then Paris; as composer, prod. succ. opera, “Boabdil der Maurenkonig” (Berlin, 1882); symph. poem ‘‘Jeanne d’ Arc’’; “ Phantast is cher Zug’’ for orch.; 2 orchestral suites and a vln.-concerto; c. many pop. pf.-pcs., incl. ‘Aus. allen Herren Lander,” and “Spantsche Ténze.” (2) Alex., Pilica, Poland, Jan. 15, 1851—Berlin, Sept. 26, 1934; bro. of above; critic, editor and writer at Berlin.
