tetrapomidæ

pl. [Modern Latin tetra pom(a); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -ide.] Bot. A family of Pleurorhizese (q.v.). tět-ra-pri-ô-nid-i-an, adj. [Pref. tetra-, and dim in. from Gr. priōn =a saw.] Zool . A term applied to all the forms grouped under Phyllograptus (q. v.), which the polypary is leaf-like in shape, and consists of four rows of cellules placed back to back. tět-ra-prō-to-don, s. [Pref. tetra-; Gr. protos =first, and odous (gen it. odontos ) = a tooth.] Palæont .: A genus of Hippo pot amide, or a subgenus of Hippopotamus. The group is distinguished from Hex a pro to don (q. v.) by having only four lower incisors. It therefore includes the fo il species from the Pliocene and Post-Pliocene of Europe, and the living Hippopotamus amphibius.
