Hydrastis

(hi-dras’tis). A genus of ranunculaceous plants. The rhizome and roots of H. canaden’sis, or goldenseal, contain the alkaloid hydras tin, and are tonic, cholagogue, and diuretic. It is given in dyspepsia, jaundice, constipation, gonorrhea, and catarrhs of the genito-urinary and nasal tracts. Dose of fluidextract, 8-30 min. (0.5-2 c.c.); of glycerite, 30-60 min. (2-4 c.c.); of tincture, 30-90 min. (2-6 c.c.).
