SPLEEN

A spongy viscus, of an oval form, the use of which is unknown; placed in the human subject in the left hypochondrium, between the eleventh nnd twelfth false ribs. Spleen is also used for a species of hypochondriasis to which the English are said to be particularly open. [s. 1162]
