city and capital of Gene see county, Mich.; on the Flint river and the Grand Trunk and other railroads, 34 miles S. E. of Saginaw; is the farming trade center for the eounty; is in a rich grain section; ships large quantities of lumber; has the State Institution for the Deaf and Dumb and a private Retreat for the Insane; and manufactures flour, lumber, autos, carriages, and woolen goods. Pop. (1910) 38,550.
