Singapore

(sing'gah-pōr,) an island of S.E. Asia,belonging to England, lying off the S. point of the Malay peninsula, from which it is cut off by a narrow strait; N. Lat. 1° 17', E. Lon. 103° 50′. Length, 27 m.; breadth, 12 m.; area, 275 sq. m. Its town, of same name, is a seaport carrying on a most extensive foreign trade; exporting spices, gambier, sago, gutta-perch a, camphor, coffee, dye woods, tortoise-shell, .
