Rotter dam

(röttür-dām,) an important commercial city of Holland, p. S. Holland, at the confluence of the Meuse and Rotte, 35 m. S.S.W. of Amsterdam. It is a well-built place, intersected by canals, and has extensive manu fs, of tobacco, soap, leather, gin, sugar, ., besides a large shipping-trade. R. was taken by the Imperialists after a six months' siege in 1489; captured by stratagem by the Spaniards in 1572; and occupied by the French in 1796. rop. 123,097. [s. 780]
