Hospodar

A title borne by the governors of Wall a chia and Moldavia, under the Turks. Although nominated by the porte, they po e ed absolute power within their own dominions. By the treaty of Adrianople in 1829, the principalities were placed under Ru ian protection, and from that time till the treaty of Paris in 1856, the hospodars were virtually the nominees of Ru ia.
