hip-joint

(hip’joint), n. The articulation of the femur or thigh-bone with the innominate bone or haunch-bone; the proximal articulation of the hind limb, corresponding to the shoulder joint of the fore limb. The head of the femur is received into the acetabulum or cotyloid cavity at the junction of the ilium, ischium, and pubis, thus constituting a ball-and-socket joint, capable of movement in every direction, and uniting to a remarkable degree mobility with stability.—Hip-joint disease.
