Kingsley, CHARLES

1819-1875. English novelist and poet, rector of Eversley from 1844, prof. at Cambridge 1860-69, Canon of Chester 1869. and of Westminster 1873. He advocated Christian Socialism, and did much to popularize and apply the views of his friend F. D. Maurice. His novels, Alton Locke, 1849; Yeast, 1851; Hypatia, 1853; Westward Ho! ( Sir Amyas Leigh ), 1855; Two Years Ago, 1857; and Here ward, 1866, were widely read, as were his sermons and juvenile books. The Heroes, 1856; The Hermits, 1869; At Last, 1872; Prose Idyls, 1873.-His brother, HENRY, 1830-1876, resident in Australia 1853-58, was another able novelist.
