Territory

(tér're-to-re.) [From L. territorium, a tract of earth.] (Amer. Law.) A section of country subject to, and forming an integral part of, the American Union, not belonging to any State, but with a separate jurisdiction and government of its own. Such political divisions are 11 in number, viz.: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Dakota, Idaho, Indian Ter.,Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Washington Ter., and Wyoming. [s. 887]
