sing. The art or practico of using or making epigraphs. Ep'i graph ist, n . One versed in epigraphy. Ep'igraphy, n . The science of inscriptions. Epigynous, (e-pij'e-nus,) a. [Gr. epi , upon, gune , female.] ( Bot . ) A term applied to the stamens and corolla when they appear to arise from the summit of the ovary, in consequence of the adherence of the calyx to that organ. Examples may be seen in the campanula, carrot, and ivy. The name Epigynæ has been given to a subdivision of the Calyciflora , and also to a subdivision of the Crolliflore , from the calyx being more or le adherent, and the ovary, consequently, inferior. - See cla ification, in art.
