(no-va'lis,) the nom-de-plume of FRIED RICH VON HARDEN BURG, a German philosopher and author, B. in Saxony, 1772; D. 1801. Besides Hymns to the Night, he produced an unfinished mystical romance, entitled He in rich von Ofterdingen. [s. 653]
