laud a nine

[Eng., ., laud an ( um ); -ine.] Chem.: C20H25NO3. Laud a mine, Laud a nine. An alkaloid, homologous with morphine and codeine, obtained from the aqueous extract of opium. It melts at 165°, and solidifies in the crystalline state on cooling. It is soluble in benzol, chloroform, and boiling alcohol; slightly soluble in cold alcohol; insoluble in ether. It di olves in concentrated sul phuric acid with a rose-red color, in nitric acid with an orange-red color, and in ferric chloride with a bright green color. Laud a nine is tastele , but its salts are very bitter. From their solutions, potash and ammonia precipitate the base in white amorphous flocks, soluble in exce of the precipitant. Laud a nine sulphate crystallizes in groups of needles, very soluble in water. The hydrochloride forms delicate colorle prisms, soluble in water and alcohol.
