WAR CAMP COMMUNITY SER

VICE, American organization formed after the entrance of the United States into the World War in 1917 to minister to the physical, intellectual and moral needs of the men in the training camps. _ Branches were established in communities adjacent to the camps to provide the men with social pleasures and reJaxations. Over 500 of these branches opened information bureaus, hotels, - lodgings and restaurants for the men in service. Athietic entertainment was _books_ and magazines were supplied, ma singing was fostered, dramatic companies were secured and many similar means employed to provide wholesome enjoyment for the men, who in many instances were hundreds of miles from home and friends. Apart from this contribution to the well being of the men in training, the Service did effective work in securing the suppre ion of liquor selling and prostitution in the neighborhood of the camps. The results achieved by the Service received the warm commendation of Secretary of War Baker, who declared that the organization had been ‘enormously effective in maintaining the morale’ of the American army.
