Nyctago (niktago)

[NL. (A. L. de Ju ieu, 1789, as a name for Mirabilis ), Nyctala, Nyctale (nik'ta-lä, -lē), n. [NL., Gr. νυκταλός, α doubtful var. of νυσταλός, drowsy.] A genus of owls of the family Strigida. The skull and ear parts are highly unsymmetrical; the outer ear is large and operculate; and the facial disk is perfect, with centric eyes and no plum i corns. There are 3 species, of small size: N. tengmalmi inhabits the northerly parts of Europe; N. richard son i is the corre 8.8.1. Acadian or Saw-whet Owl ( Nyctala acadica). sponding American form; N. acadica, the Acadian or saw-whet owl, is much smaller than either, about 7 inches long, and more widely distributed in North America. 4046
