(koin.) [From L. coin us, a die for stamping money.] Apiece of metal stamped with certain marks, and made current at a certain value. Strictly speaking, C. differs from money, as the species differs from the genus. Money is any matter, whether metal, paper, beads, cowries, ., which has currency as a medium in commerce. C. is a particular species always made of metal, and formed by a proce called coinage. See MINT and MONEY. [s. 204]
