John II., 14051454. King of Castile and Leon 1407. His long reign was distracted by civil strife and wars with the Moors and with Aragon. John, or JOAO, I., "the Great," 13571433. King of Portugal 1383. He defeated the Moors in Africa 1415, and promoted naval explorations which added the Azores, Canaries, Cape Verde Is., and Madeira to his territories.—II. 1455-1495. King 1481. He promoted the discoveries of Diaz and De Gama, declined Columbus's overtures, sent a fleet to America 1493, and invoked a papal decision as to the rival claims of Spain and Portugal.IV. 1604-1656.
