(gélt’-mark), (1) Karl, Keszthely, Hungary, May 18, 1830— Vienna, Jan. 2, 1915; noted composer; violinist and pianist, pupil of Jansa (vln.), later of Bohm Geary) at the Vienna Cons., then mainly self-taught; début 1858 Vienna, with his own pf.-concerto; the popular overture ‘“‘Sakuntala” (op. 13); and a Scherzo, Orch. (op. Andante, t9) and Finale for strengthened by his opera ‘‘Die Konigin von Saba” (Vienna, 1875); c. also operas ‘‘Merlin’? (Vienna, 1886) v. succ.; “‘Das Heimchen am Herd”? based on Dickens’ ‘‘Cricket on the Hearth” (Vienna, 1896); ‘‘ Die Kriegsgefangene”’ (Vienna Ct.-opera, 1899); ‘‘Der Fremdling’’ (not prod.) and ‘‘Gétz von Berlichingen’’; c. also 2 symphonies, incl. ‘“‘Landliche Hochseit’; overtures, ‘‘Im Friihling,” “‘ Pro me the us Bound,” and ‘‘Sap pho,” also a pop. vin. concerto, suite for vin. and piano, choruses, songs, piano works; author, “‘Reminiscences My Life.’ (2) Rubin, New York City, Aug. 15, 1872—March 6, 1936; composer; nephew of above; at 7 began to study with A. M. Livonius, with whom he went to Vienna, 1889; studied there also with Door and Fuchs; later in New York with Joseffy and Dvorak; 1892-1901, in Colorado Springs, Colorado; founder and dir. of a Coll. of Mus. there, “Theme and Variations’ for orch. (performed by Seidl, 1895); c. a pf.-trio, cantata with orch. ‘‘Pilgrimage to Kevlaar,”’. overture ‘‘ Hiawatha” (played by Boston Symph. Orch.), vln.-sonata, etc.; after 1902 lived again in N. Y. as teacher and comp.; 1924 until his death, head of comp. dept., Juilliard Grad. School; c. “Gettysburg Requiem’ (N. Y.
