(1877), biologist and chemist; b. New York. He was educated at Columbia, receiving in 1900 the M.D. degree of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of that university; and also studied at the universities of Stra burg and Berlin. Later he taught physiological and_ biological chemistry at Harvard and was an investigator at the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. From 1908 to 1921 he performed further scientific work for the government as chemical biologist of the Bureau of Plant Industry and as chief of the Bureau of Chemistry.
