Gnndert Haifa GUNDERT, Herman: Born in Stuttgart, 1814. Died in 1893. He joined tlie Basel Mi ion in Malabar, India, in 1839, and for twenty-four years he exerted a wide and potent influence in India and other lands. Dr. Gundert was a man of great learning, and his pen was a ble ing to the cause of mi ions. He was the author of many Malayalam books; his dictionaries did much toward the development of the language and dialects of the people among whom he labored, and his Bible translations were painstaking and scholarly. His failing health nece itated his return home, where he became editorial secretary and principal of the “Calwer Verlagsverein.” GUNNAUR: A town in the district of Budaon, United Provinces, India, situated about 3 miles from the left bank of the Ganges.
