(2) principality dependent on grand-duchy of Oldenes area, 312 sq. miles. Pop. seaport, Cheshire; has ferry, and tunnel under Mersey connecting it with Liverpool; became borough in 1877; large shipbuilding works, iron foundries; splendid docks, first of which was opened 1847; exports coal, etc; three public parks; fine public buildings, including town hall, library. Pop. 150,000.
